About Long Island LEADS
We are a group of makers, educators, librarians, museum directors, parents, students, community members, non-profit organizations and companies who believe in hands-on learning for innovation.
Long Island LEADS is a nonprofit organization and a founding member of Nation of Makers. It is formed for the educational purpose of promoting the Maker Movement and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) initiatives for kindergarten - 12th grade public school, private school, and homeschool children on Long Island, NY. Through Maker Meetups and the annual SLIME - Students of Long Island Maker Expo, school-community connections support Long Island youth to develop the 21st century skills necessary to become college, career, and life ready.
Through making and hands-on learning we can help prepare our students today for the world of tomorrow, while respecting the past. Making promotes critical thinking, problem-solving skills, empathy for others, appreciation for the environment, cross-generational collaboration, and communication. Twentieth-century learning skills that involve both low and high tech can prepare our students to become active participants and competitors in the global community.
They say it takes a village to raise a child. Partnerships among schools, libraries, museums, companies, civic associations, and nonprofits can work together to support our children and, in turn, the Long Island economy.
LEARN about new technologies, tools, and toys for hands-on learning, and how to incorporate them into the curriculum.
EDUCATE our children to participate in the global community, and to compete in the global community.
ADVOCATE for integrated STEAM education for all students.
DEVELOP networking opportunities for makers, educators, librarians, museum directors, parents, students, community members, non-profit organizations and companies.
SUPPORT relationships among schools, homes, and communities.
